Windows on Mac

Installing Windows on Mac turned out to be a perfectly doable thing. There were three hurdles:

  • Diskutil reported minor errors on the system disk.

Boot from install CD, run Diskutil from pull-down menu.

  • Partitioning failed due to unmovable files.

Shrinking the partition size dodged the problem but left me with a smaller partition than I really wanted. Rumor has it that Parallels’ disk images are to blame and that moving them isnt really a problem.

  • Boot Camp didn’t recognize Windows XP CD I burnt via MSDN.

Booting the CD manually worked.

A future hurdle may be that I had to activate Windows to upgrade to Media Player 11 to get functional video codecs, so if I decide to reinstall to enlarge the partition, or move Windows off to a different machine should one become available, I might have problems with the license.

Why? Mac games are few in number. and perpetually expensive. Windows games are legion, and cheap a year or two after release.
