Photo woes

I have a lot of pictures on file somewhere. In roughly 50% of the cases, the picture is not on a disk that is stashed somewhere inaccessible and anyway likely to have failed.

A very few of them are online on my album site. That site, incidentally, runs Gallery2, which is a very powerful and versatile piece of software. It’s also tricky to manage, ridicolously overpowered and overgadgeted, the themes I’ve looked at all stink (honestly, (1) table layouts for galleries is just wrong, and (2) when using css flow, like you should, can’t you do it right? Y’know, like making it look good?) and the WordPress integration plugin looks horrible.

WordPress 2.5 is going to have galleries, but they’ll be linked to posts, which won’t cut it for me, so I’ll still need some external gallery thingy.

ZenPhoto looks promising. It’s simple, it offers clean, if not perfect, themes (narrow columns: good for text. Ungood in galleries.), the integration plugin works and looks good in posts, and even better integration with WordPress is promised in a future release. It has a nice and simple filesystem interface (upload a directory of images, and they’ll appear automatically). There’s no process for exporting from Gallery2, though, which is a downer. That job is gonna suck.

I have a lot of recent pictures. I have stories I want to tell, and I want to illustrate them. Which means I need to solve this problem somehow to calm my inner geek beast.

(You may or may not have noticed a lot of theme changes in the blog recently. It’s part of this process: Find a theme that’s nice and simple and integrates well with whatever.)

I could say “fuck it” and switch to PicasaWeb and Blogger. It would be simple. It would be easy. It would be restrictive. It wouldn’t be hacky. Hacky good. We likes to code, yes we does.

Enden er nær!

The Joy of Mac

If cut’n'paste and/or drag-and-drop just stops working on your Mac, delete ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist and relogin.

Windows on Mac

Installing Windows on Mac turned out to be a perfectly doable thing. There were three hurdles:

  • Diskutil reported minor errors on the system disk.

Boot from install CD, run Diskutil from pull-down menu.

  • Partitioning failed due to unmovable files.

Shrinking the partition size dodged the problem but left me with a smaller partition than I really wanted. Rumor has it that Parallels’ disk images are to blame and that moving them isnt really a problem.

  • Boot Camp didn’t recognize Windows XP CD I burnt via MSDN.

Booting the CD manually worked.

A future hurdle may be that I had to activate Windows to upgrade to Media Player 11 to get functional video codecs, so if I decide to reinstall to enlarge the partition, or move Windows off to a different machine should one become available, I might have problems with the license.

Why? Mac games are few in number. and perpetually expensive. Windows games are legion, and cheap a year or two after release.

MySQL

I need to use MySQL in one of the projects at work. Fair enough, databases are useful little thingies. Big thingies. Frustrations mount quickly, though.

Example.

  1. Dataset in text file contains N unique rows which I may want to update now and then.
  2. N is large.
  3. No column value is unique to each row, so there is no natural primary key.
  4. Every row is guaranteed to be unique.
  5. Does MySQL have some operator, procedure, function or command I can use to avoid duplicate rows when updating database from new text source? Can’t find any.

New server.

The weblog had to move to another server, for technical reasons. Not for legal reasons. That was right out, I deny that completely. But anyway, you didn’t notice, of course, because the move went without a hitch. No hitches at all.

Det virkar!

Sånn, no ser det ut til at me er i bizniz. Vel, ikkje heilt, for gamle lenkjer og bilete og slikt er jo ikkje fiksa. Kjem eg til å gidda? Betviles. Men no bur denne fjasevevloggen her. Takk for slik hjelp, Håvard. Ta ein ølbong.

DNS-faen.

New action here.

So we moved on. That is, just testing now. But my university account’s horizon is looming, and so is the disk quota. So we might as well set up elsewhere. So we went here. Will endeavour to move my old content in a short while.

Spambugs, one down.

After discovering that «.» had made the spamword list (no, it wasn’t supposed to be there) and correcting that minor mishap, maybe now will comments work after a fashion.
